Viviamo in un’epoca caratterizzata dal “fattore leader”. La portata e le modalità specifiche con le quali questo fattore si impone all’interno di una comunità politica variano a seconda dell’ordinamento politico di riferimento, ma ormai è difficile negare che singoli attori politici individuali siano sempre più in grado di determinare gli esiti e gli equilibri di intere comunità politiche, a diversi livelli di governo. Non sappiamo tuttavia con chiarezza quali siano le variabili chiave che spiegano l’emergere di una leadership politica di successo. Quella che viviamo è, per altro, una fase storica in cui mantenere lo status di leader nel tempo è sempre più difficile. Si assiste spesso a un processo di “cannibalizzazione della leadership” con sostituzioni repentine di leaders rimasti tali a volte per brevissimo tempo. Nella nostra riflessione teorica ci siamo posti l’obiettivo di individuare queste variabili chiave attraverso un approccio olistico. Il triangolo della leadership politica è l’esito di questa riflessione.
Il modello: ordinario, competente e autentico
Secondo il modello del triangolo della leadership, si raggiunge lo status di leader di successo quando un attore politico riesce nell’arduo tentativo di essere percepito allo stesso tempo come un attore ordinario (“qualcuno/a come me”),competente (“qualcuno/a migliore di me”) e autentico (“qualcuno/a di cui potersi fidare”). La stella gialla in Figura 1, in corrispondenza delle coordinate AOC rappresenta la situazione di co-occorenza e allo stesso tempo di equilibrio tra le tre componenti che formano il triangolo della leadership.
Perché è utile: dal nazionale al locale
A partire da questa applicazione base, il triangolo della leadership contempla varie proprietà. Si adatta ai mutamenti – di contesto e non solo – che caratterizzano la vita di un governo o di un sistema politico. Si pensi per esempio a cosa è successo con l’arrivo di una pandemia. In un caso simile non è solo inutile ma addirittura penalizzante per l’attore politico essere percepito come un leader ordinario (“uno come me”). Come evidenziato dalla stella rossa in Fig.1 il punto ideale per essere leader in questo contesto è in AC, ovvero quando si verifica la co-occorenza della percezione di essere un leader autentico e competente ma per nulla ordinario. In altri termini mutamenti di contesto mutano la “formula magica” con la quale un attore individuale assurge allo status di leader di successo e il triangolo della leadership suggerisce in quale direzione. Ecco per esempio spiegata l’ascesa di una figura guida come Mario Draghi in tempo di Covid-19 (o quella di Mario Monti concausata dallo scoppio della crisi economica del 2007), così come il crollo radicale di un attore politico come Matteo Salvini, scarsamente percepito come attore politico ideale per guidare il paese in un momento di grave crisi sistemica.
Ma l’utilità di questo modello non si ferma all’analisi e comprensione delle leadership nazionali di successo (o di insuccesso, come nel caso Donald Trump, ma per approfondirlo vi rimandiamo al nostro testo). Funziona anche a carattere “locale”. Si pensi all'attuale sindaco di Milano, Giuseppe Sala, in grado di incarnare una “ideale” gestione del triangolo della leadership.
Due amministratori di successo: Beppe Sala e Luca Zaia
Beppe Sala, prima e dopo l’emergenza Covid, è un leader percepito come sia competente – un manager di successo che, nella percezione dei cittadini milanesi, starebbe con costanza, professionalità e con il duro lavoro incarnando al meglio “l’animo efficiente” della città – ma anche un leader ordinario. Sui suoi profili social, ad esempio, è solito condividere momenti di vita quotidiana che raccontano ciò che lo appassiona e lo diverte, facendo tesoro anche di continue contaminazioni con il mondo pop milanese e non solo (si pensi a contenuti con celebrità del mondo della moda, dello sport, della musica; o alle immagini che lo ritraggono in tutta la sua “milanesità”, intento a godersi un aperitivo in centro città). E – soprattutto – autentico, quindi qualcuno di cui potersi fidare: qualcuno che non è mosso da cinici calcoli politici volti a una personalistica scalata di potere a livello nazionale, ma è sinceramente interessato a spendersi per migliorare la vita dei cittadini milanesi. Allo stesso tempo, però, il sindaco Sala “durante il Covid” è un primo cittadino che ha completamente e immediatamente escluso dalla propria comunicazione ogni richiamo o rimando a questa sua dimensione più pop di leader totalmente a suo agio nella Milano patria della comunicazione, del business e del divertimento, per trasmettere invece l’immagine di un leader con la testa, impegnata – 24 ore su 24 – a far uscire i propri cittadini da un’emergenza sanitaria. Anche solo un rapido sguardo al suo profilo Instagram, prima, durante e dopo il Covid, trasmette questa sua capacità di adeguarsi ai cambiamenti in atto.
L’adattabilità è un tratto evidente anche in altri casi a livello non nazionale. Si pensi alla capacità di conquistare (e poi mantenere) il potere politico da parte di un leader “regionale” come Luca Zaia: presidente della regione Veneto dal 2010, rieletto poi per la terza volta nel 2020 con oltre il 75% dei voti. Anche Zaia – letto utilizzando le lenti teoriche del triangolo della leadership – è un leader in grado, nel tempo, di mantenere intatta la sua capacità di essere percepito dai cittadini veneti come una figura allo stesso tempo competente, autentica e ordinaria, con la stessa predisposizione di Sala ad adeguarsi ai cambiamenti imposti dalla pandemia.
Il triangolo della leadership permette quindi di analizzare e comparare diverse tipologie di “capi” da più punti di vista, in ottica diacronica o multilivello. Consente di esaminare e comparare non solo leader politici nazionali – come presidenti e leader di partito – ma anche sindaci, presidenti di regione o altro. Allo stesso tempo, questo modello agevola la comparazione di leader di epoche storiche differenti, permettendo quindi una piena comprensione di come siano variati (o al contrario rimasti immutati), nel tempo, i tratti alla base di leadership politiche di successo.
Dall’accademia, ai professionisti della politica, fino agli influencer
Il triangolo della leadership non è solo un nuovo strumento teorico per aiutare la comunità accademica a comprendere perché alcune leadership emergano ed altre falliscano. È un ausilio per i leader stessi, gli aspiranti leader e i rispettivi collaboratori, per esempio per capire come capitalizzare al meglio i propri sforzi comunicativi. Può anche servire a capire chi possa essere il miglior potenziale leader all’interno di una determinata organizzazione politica (sia essa un partito politico, un sindacato o un nascente movimento sociale). Il triangolo della leadership costituisce pertanto un esempio di ponte tra l’accademia e il mondo dei professionisti della politica, facendo propria l’esigenza di mettere il più possibile in relazione questi due mondi nell’ottica della terza missione.
In ultimo, sebbene il triangolo della leadership sia stato pensato per essere applicato in ambito politico, questo modello teorico può essere esteso ad altri ambiti.: in pedagogia o nell’influencer marketing ad esempio (cioè quando si tratta della capacità di “influenzare, di generare un passaparola strategico – di solito via social media – che incide in maniera significativa sulla visibilità di un marchio”).
Chiara Ferragni come Alessandro Barbero
Si pensi ad esempio al caso di Chiara Ferragni, anche lei una leader di opinione a cui possiamo facilmente associare la co-occorrenza della percezione di ordinarietà, competenza e autenticità. Analizzando il caso Chiara Ferragni, emerge infatti come il suo successo passi anche dal suo essere percepita come “una di noi”, una mamma come ogni altra che tramite la sua comunicazione digitale comunica momenti di vita quotidiana, gioie e difficoltà dell’essere mamma e donna oggi, soprattutto nel conciliare la vita personale con quella professionale. Ma Chiara Ferragni nella percezione comune è anche una donna competente, una imprenditrice di grandissimo successo in grado di creare un impero mediatico ed economico “dal nulla”, tanto ad esempio da essere coinvolta in consigli di amministrazione di grandissime e importantissime aziende di livello internazionale. Allo stesso tempo è una donna e imprenditrice percepita come autentica, grazie alle sue battaglie su tematiche quali l’empowerment femminile, la donazione del sangue o la sicurezza urbana. È indubbio però che le recenti indagini per truffa aggravata che stanno riguardando proprio Chiara Ferragni hanno già avuto un effetto nella sua capacità, finora di fatto quasi “infallibile”, di essere percepita come “qualcuno di cui potersi fidare”. Se queste indagini produrranno un effetto negativo sulla sua capacità di essere percepita come un leader di successo, sarà perché mettono in discussione proprio la percezione di autenticità dell’imprenditrice digitale.
Insomma, anche nel caso di influencer, la “formula magica” per trasformarsi da semplice utente social a – appunto – influencer di successo, sembrerebbe proprio la capacità di essere percepiti allo stesso tempo, competente, ordinario e autentico. Casi come quello di Chiara Ferragni non sono ovviamente isolati nel mondo della influencer economy: la cuoca Benedetta Rossi con i suoi manicaretti fatti in casa, il fisico e docente Vincenzo Schettini con “La fisica che ci piace” così come Alessandro Barbero con i suoi racconti di storia sono tre personalità che esprimono una ideale capacità di conciliare e combinare i tratti di autenticità, ordinarietà e competenza.
Il triangolo della leadership è quindi un framework teorico e uno strumento euristico con quei tratti di interdisciplinarietà tanto necessari nell’accademia contemporanea, ancora troppo caratterizzata dall’incapacità di settori scientifico-disciplinari differenti di costruire occasioni di confronto, dialogo e mutua collaborazione e sinergia scientifica.
